Burning Man is a week-long annual gathering held in the Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada. Founded in 1986 on Baker Beach in San Francisco before moving to the desert in 1990, it has grown into one of the world's most iconic cultural events. Approximately 80,000 participants create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to art, self-expression, and community. The event culminates in the burning of a large wooden effigy ("the Man") and operates on 10 guiding principles including radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, and radical self-reliance. While not a traditional music festival, Burning Man features hundreds of sound camps and art cars playing electronic, house, techno, and experimental music around the clock.
